Child and Youth Mortality
Child and youth mortality refers to the death of children and youth between the ages of 1-17.
- Deaths of Pinellas County children and youth 1-17 years of age averaged 39 per year over the last ten years, 0.23 deaths per 1000 population.
- The mortality rate for black children and youth significantly exceeds that of white children and youth.
Fifty-three percent of deaths were the result of injury, including homicides and suicides.
- On average, there are approximately four homicides and two suicides per year. In 2008, there were seven homicides, the same as 2007, and one suicide.
Pinellas County’s child and youth mortality rate is below the state and other Florida counties of similar size.
