Dissolution of Marriage
The impact of divorce on the well-being and
long-term development of a child can be very significant and adversely
affect the child’s emotional state, behavior, schoolwork and other aspects
of the child’s life.
- In 2006, there
were 7,351 marriages and 3,718 dissolutions of marriage (divorce or
annulment) in Pinellas County with 37% of dissolutions affecting families
with children. In total, over 2,100 minor children were affected,
approximately 1.2% of the under 18 population. As shown in the chart
below, Pinellas County has experienced a declining trend in both the
number of dissolutions involving minor children and the number of children
affected.
- In 2006, 20%
of dissolutions affected one child and 16.5% affected two or more
children. Almost two-thirds of dissolutions did not involve children.
- The
dissolution rate for Pinellas County’s married-couples with children
(number of dissolutions affecting children per 1000 marriages with
children) has declined over the past three years and was approximately
equal to the Florida average in 2006.
