Children With Special Needs
Students with
disabilities or special learning needs – called exceptionalities by the Florida
Department of Education – include children with physical, sensory, cognitive
and mental health impairment as well as gifted children.
The number of unduplicated Pinellas County public school students with
disabilities has steadily decreased since 2003. In the 2007-2008 school-year,
there were 16,788 students with disabilities and 5,565 gifted students in
Pinellas County. Students with more than one exceptionality are only counted
once by their primary exceptionality.
Communications disorders are, by far, the largest group
of exceptionalities in Florida. In Pinellas County and other counties of
similar size, communications disorders range from 65% to 80% of
disabilities.
