Infant Mortality

Infant mortality refers to the death of an infant before they reach their first birthday.  A number of factors impact infant mortality including the health of the mother, social and economic conditions and the availability, and use, of health care options.

  • The infant mortality rate in Pinellas County has averaged 7.6 deaths per 1000 live births over the last ten years. However, infant mortality rates for non-whites are substantially above whites - in 2005 and 2006, non-white rates were more than triple that of whites, as non-white rates hit their highest levels in 10 years.

·         A comparison of Pinellas’ infant mortality rate to the state and similarly sized Florida counties shows that during the 2004-2006 period, Pinellas’ infant mortality rate was modestly above the state and Palm Beach county rates, but below rates for Duval, Hillsborough and Orange counties.
