Child and Youth Mortality
Child and youth mortality refers to the death of children and youth between the
ages of 1-17.
- Deaths of Pinellas County children and youth 1-17 years of age averaged 39
per year over the last ten years, 0.23 deaths per 1000 population.
- The mortality rate for black children and youth significantly exceeds
that of white children and youth.
- Fifty-three percent of deaths were the result of injury, including
homicides and suicides.
- On average, there are approximately four homicides and two suicides
per year. In 2008, there were seven homicides, the same as 2007, and one
suicide.
- Pinellas County’s child and youth mortality rate is below
the state and other Florida counties of similar size.
