Child and Youth Mortality

Child and youth mortality refers to the death of children and youth between the ages of 1-17.

  • Deaths of Pinellas County children and youth 1-17 years of age averaged 39 per year over the last ten years, 0.23 deaths per 1000 population.

    • The mortality rate for black children and youth significantly exceeds that of white children and youth.
  • Fifty-three percent of deaths were the result of injury, including homicides and suicides.

    • On average, there are approximately four homicides and two suicides per year. In 2008, there were seven homicides, the same as 2007, and one suicide.

  • Pinellas County’s child and youth mortality rate is below the state and other Florida counties of similar size.
